Intro

Political ideologies are often associated with age, with the left-wing being associated with the vital liberal youth and the right-wing being associated with the conservative old age. What it is about age that makes us convert from “everything is possible?” to “let’s consider this more thoroughly”?. As the infamous Oscar Wilde stated: “The old believe everything, the middle-aged suspect everything, the young know everything.” What is behind this age-old myth?

P1: Idea Generation: Idealism versus Pragmatism

Do the young lack grounded reasoning? Or do the old lack imagination? The latter 2 questions are the 1st of 3 constructive interplays presented during this article. One of the reasons we become more conservative as we age is a consequence of acquiring difficult life experiences. Being old means being practical about how the world works. The army veterans might grunt to young people, as if they don’t understand what it took for them to breathe this air and drink pure water. The old resent the young for not comprehending the world through the lens of harsh brutal reality they have been exposed to throughout their lives. It’s rather easy to idealise the world when you’re young. As we age, however, we inevitably gravitate toward carrying more responsibility and hardship, even through raising children.
